Roy F. Fleming fonds:
Roy Franklin Fleming (?-1958), Canadian art educator and writer, was Art Master at the Ottawa Teacher's College for much of his professional career. Fleming took an active interest in the Ottawa and international art scene of his day and was the author of numerous articles about art and art education. Fleming contributed to the premiere edition of the Yearbook of Canadian Art (1913) and wrote a series of articles on a number of prominent Canadian artists entitled "Visits to the Studios of Canadian artists" for the Ottawa Journal.
The fonds consists of newspaper and magazine clippings on the National Gallery of Canada and its collections, various art exhibitions, American artist and teacher Robert Henri (1865-1929), as well as an annotated copy of Bill 187, An Act to incorporate the National Gallery of Canada (1913). The fonds includes 2 letters by Robert Henri written in response to Fleming's letter asking about methods for teaching drawing. A file of materials relating to Fleming's activities as a teacher and a writer includes: notes on and reproductions of paintings in the collection of the National Gallery of Canada, a typed manuscript entitled The National Gallery of Canada and its possible relation to Education in our Schools, lists of artists and paintings, a student's essay, and notes for essays. The fonds further consists of typescripts on the following artists from Fleming's "Visits to the Studios of Canadian Artists" series: Charles W. Jefferys (1869-1951), Henry H. Vickers (1851-1918), Philippe and Henri Hébert (1850-1917; 1884-1950), Paul Wickson (1860-1922), Sir William Van Horne (1843-1915), G. Horne Russell (1861-1934), Edmond Dyonnet (1859-1954), Robert Harris (1849-1919), Homer Watson (1855-1936), and Hamilton MacCarthy (1847-1939). Correspondence from Jefferys (photocopy only), Vickers, the Héberts, Wickson, and Russell are also included here.
