Collection Summary

Biographical Sketch

Franklin Peleg Brownell, painter and art instructor, was born in New Bedford, Massachusetts in 1857. He trained at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts School and at the Académie Julian and the Atelier of Léon-Joseph-Florentin Bonnat in Paris. Brownell served as the Headmaster of the Ottawa School of Art from 1887 until its temporary closure in 1899. His work was exhibited regularly at the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts and the Art Association of Montreal. In 1895 he became a full member of the Royal Canadian Academy. He taught at the Women's Art Association of Canada (1898-1921) and served as a Member of Council for the Royal Canadian Academy (1901-1903). In 1907 he resigned from the Ontario Society of Artists to become a founding member of the Canadian Art Club. He served on the Jury for the Canadian Section of Fine Arts at the 1923 British Empire Exhibition at Wembley, England. When the Ottawa School of Art reopened in 1925, Brownell was appointed Principal, a position he held until 1937. Brownell died in Ottawa in 1946.

Scope and Contents of the Collection

Records consist of 1 undated, framed diploma, appointing Brownell as an academician of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. It is signed by former Governor General of Canada Lord Aberdeen (1847-1934) and addressed to "Franklin Brownell, Painter of the City of Ottawa."
