Biographical Sketch

Philip Clark, Canadian chartered accountant, served as Secretary to the Canadian Group of Painters from 1936-1946. The Group was formed in 1933 by Canadian artists A.Y. Jackson (1882-1974), Lawren Harris (1885-1970), Arthur Lismer (1885-1969), Frank Carmichael (1890-1945), Alfred Joseph Casson (1898-1992), Frederick Horsman Varley (1881-1969), Edwin Holgate (1892-1977), and Lionel Lemoine Fitzgerald (1890-1956). Its aim was to foster closer co-operation between artists in Canada and to hold exhibitions of artists' works. Clark was well-established in the Toronto arts community through membership in the Arts and Letters Club. In 1931 he married the artist Paraskeva Clark (1898-1986), whom he had met in Paris. His wife exhibited in the first exhibition of the Canadian Group of Painters in 1933. She was elected a member of the Group in 1936.
