Collection Summary

Title: Canadian Art Libraries and Information Services Section (CARLIS) fonds.
Dates: – 1967-1986.
Quantity:  – 36.5 cm of textual records.

Administrative History

The Canadian Art Libraries and Information Services Section (CARLIS) was founded in 1967 as a committee within the Canadian Library Association. Its mandate was to support, advance, and promote the cause of art librarianship in Canada. Originally known as the Art Libraries Committee, the group petitioned to become a subject division within the Canadian Association of Special Libraries and Information Services (CASLIS), achieving this new status by 1976. At that time, the Committee's name was officially changed to the Canadian Art Libraries Section of CASLIS. In 1977, a cosmetic change to the group's logo was proposed, in order to clarify the logo's interpretation and encourage greater international recognition. The new logo, CARLIS, did not change the meaning or the name of the section.
