Biographical Sketch

Sir Arthur George Doughty (1860-1936), Canadian archivist and historian and first Dominion archivist (1904-1935), is credited with building and developing the collections of the Public Archives of Canada. At one time a literary and dramatic critic, Doughty retained a lifelong interest in the arts. He amassed collections at the Public Archives that possess not only historical and documentary value but also cultural significance. These include various collections of works of art. One such collection is that of the drawings of English military officer James Pattison Cockburn (1779-1847), a topographical draughtman who created accurate pictorial records of Quebec and eastern Canada during the 1830s.
