Biographical Sketch

Rosalie Shapiro graduated in Journalism and Humanities from Carlton University, Ottawa. She worked in radio, newspapers, and advertising before accepting the position of Director of the controversial Blue Barn Gallery (then called the Little Blue Barn Gallery) in Bells Corners, Ontario (1966-1967). During her time as Director of the Blue Barn Gallery, Shapiro kept a scrapbook of materials related to her work at the Gallery. In 1968, Shapiro began a new career as an etcher. In the early 1980s, she organized exhibitions of works by herself and by other artists in her Ottawa home.

Scope and Content

The fonds consists of 1 scrapbook containing newspaper clippings related to the art sale that Shapiro organized at her home in 1965 as a benefit following a fire at Ottawa's Queen's street studios, as well as material related to Shapiro's tenure as Director of the Blue Barn Gallery. The material includes newspaper clippings of Blue Barn shows and general art news and events, invitations, exhibition cards, press releases, and correspondence. There is also a photograph (in connection with Shapiro's exhibition of Canadian artist Léon Bellefleur's (1910-2007) works at the Blue Barn?) and a letter in support of a Canada Council Grant written by Shapiro for Canadian artist Dorothy Renals (1932- ) in 1971. The collection also includes correspondence, exhibition cards and hand outs, contracts, and newspaper clippings related to Shapiro's exhibitions at her home in 1984 and a note card from Canadian sculptor Ethel Rosenfield (1910-2000), 1985.
