Biographical Sketch

Alex Colville was born in Toronto in 1920 and moved to Amherst, Nova Scotia with his family in 1929. He attended the School of Fine and Applied Art at Mount Allison University, Sackville, New Brunswick from September 1938 until the spring of 1942, graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. After completing his studies, Colville entered the army and served as an official war artist from 1944 to 1946. He returned to Mount Allison following the war to take a teaching position, and taught painting and art history from 1946 until 1963. In 1963 Colville retired from teaching in order to concentrate on painting.

Colville has been the recipient of numerous awards and honours. He was commissioned to design a set of coins for Canada's Centennial in 1967, and was made an Officer (1967) and later a Companion (1982) of the Order of Canada. He has received numerous honorary degrees, and in 2003 won the Governor General's Visual and Media Arts Award. He served as a member of the Board of the National Gallery of Canada from 1990 to 1993. Major retrospectives of his work were held at the Art Gallery of Ontario in 1983 and at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts in 1994. His work has been exhibited extensively across Canada and internationally. His work can be found in public and private collections including the National Gallery of Canada, the Art Gallery of Ontario, and the Museum of Modern Art, Musée national d'Art moderne - Centre national d'art et de culture Georges Pompidou.

Scope and Content

The fonds consists of 570 drawings by Alex Colville mainly executed while he was a student at Mount Allison University. A few of the drawings were completed before he attended university and a few while he was in the army, but prior to becoming a war artist in 1944.
