Biographical Sketch

Hiro (Yasuhiro Wakabayashi), American fashion and commercial photographer, was born in Shanghai to Japanese parents in 1930. In 1946 the family returned to Japan, where Hiro remained until he moved to New York in 1954. In New York, Hiro briefly attended the School of Modern Photography and later worked an as apprentice to Richard Avedon (1923-2004). In 1956 he began working under Alexey Brodovitch at Harper's Bazaar, a magazine to which he continued to make significant contributions until 1975. In 1969 Hiro was named Photographer of the Year by the American Society of Magazine Photographers. Hiro continues to work as a freelance commercial photographer. In 1959 he married a Canadian named Elizabeth Clark. The two spend their summers near Georgian Bay.

Scope and Content

Collection consists of 1 undated mounted photo postcard. The original photograph was printed in 1978. This postcard is part of a series of reprints dating from ca.1995. The postcard has postal markings on both the recto and verso, in addition to a note written by Elizabeth Clark to Shelly Dowell dating from 1998. The message reads, "Dear Shelly, Thank you for the book. All sounds wonderful and will be perfect reading for the cottage in Canada, where I always do my best reading. Can't wait. Regards, Elizabeth." The photograph was originally titled, "Rossiter Boat, Go Home Bay, Canada." George Rossiter was a well known boat maker from the area and, according to Shelly Dowell, may have been the Hiro's neighbour.

Immediate source of acquisition: Donated to the National Gallery of Canada Library and Archives by Shelley Dowell in March 2003.
